FK Chiller marathon on air promos
8th-Sep-2009 10:26 pm
FK--Nick (cross)
I owe people responses and I promise to get to them. Unfortunately, my internet time is a little scarce right now because my brother needs my computer for work stuff.

However, I do come bearing gifts for those of you who couldn't share in the fun of yesterday's Forever Knight marathon. It was awesome and fun and very enlightening is some ways. (Psst! Chiller edits made completely new scenes!) Chiller also put out three promos to promote the darn thing. They're pretty darn cool. I've uploaded all three to YouTube. The first one is here, the second one is here and the third one is here. Having FK on my TV was great and I can't wait to post about it!

It sounds to me, from your wonderful descriptions, that Chiller did not, in fact, make new cuts itself. It sounds like they aired the original, CBS, US, first-season cuts, which were notoriously short, crammed into that special late-night slot. This is exciting, because it means that those cuts survived!

When the DVDs were first (finally) coming out, we were grateful for anything, of course, but what we wanted most were the German first-run version of first season (longest), then the Canadian, and only last the US. When the first DVD sets hit, people scrutinized them, timed them, and determined they were the first-run Canadian cuts, and while we would have loved extras, we all settled back pretty happily. (Only first-season has such first-run differences. The others were the same in all markets, until SciFi re-cut them for reruns.)

I have these on VHS still, so I can look up the differences if needed, but all the ones you describe click with me. Perhaps the most famous one is that the first-run US cut of "False Witness" did not include the scene in which Nick tells Janette that Lacroix is dead... exactly as you describe. My friend batdina, a Raven, watched the first run in the US, and she tells the story of much later getting together with people who had tapes of the first-run Canadians, and her exclamation and excitement over that key scene.

Right up until the DVDs came out, there would be confused debates on forkni-l from time-to-time, as people cited slightly different cuts of the same episode. This hit home for me when I saw a certain scene in a vid that I had never seen in an episode. It clearly belonged in "Last Act" -- there was Erica -- but it wasn't on my tape. :-)

Now, it's also important to know that there were a few short scenes in the US versions that were cut from the Canadian versions, trading off for those longer scenes. ~sigh~ This is why a brief burst of key dialogue about souls is missing from the "False Witness" flashback on the DVDs, darn them. Just a few sentences, but it's so very missing. So that would be the absolute check on the origin of these Chiller cuts: did their "False Witness" include [ "Why dio you think that is, Nicholas? Is it because they have souls?"/"And you do not."/"We do not!" ] ?

Now that is very cool. The CBS cuts you say. Well that would certainly explain the "Surround Sound" logo. It's all so exciting! The closest I got to vampires in 1992 was Count Duckula cartoons, lol, so I never got to see this version of the show.

When the first DVD sets hit, people scrutinized them, timed them, and determined they were the first-run Canadian cuts, and while we would have loved extras, we all settled back pretty happily.

The first time I ever got wind of various cuts for the first season was in 2003 with the announcement of the first season DVDs. I remembered obsessing over the show before XF came along so I did some searching and came across fan discussion about the various cuts. The discussion was extremely interesting but when the price for the set was released I deemed it too much for money tight, college self. I sometimes like to hope that Sony will release a box set of the series with the complete cuts. If the pop culture interest in vampire hangs on for a few more years who knows. Well, the complete cuts may be a pipe dream but the box set might not.

I was hoping Chiller would air the complete/Canadian cut of DK. I wanted Nick's comments to Alyce about the incorrect placement of armor on the knight "Guy couldn't relieve himself" and covering by saying he took classes at NYU. "It happens to you once, you don't forget." Oh, Nick.

That omission is mind blowing to me. It's such a fantastic scene not only in atmosphere and performance but in that it reveals Janette's thoughts on the LaCroix incident.

Hmm, I'll have to look that up. My first instinct is to say yes it's there but I won't be certain until I screen the episode again.
