VID: The Rainbow Connection [The X-Files]
5th-Nov-2008 07:42 am
Mulder & Scully--partners

Title:
The Rainbow Connection
Artist: Sarah McLachlan
Vidder: abby82
Fandom: The X-Files
Length:
3:26
Download:
YouTube and Sendspace (38 MB, WMV), blip (streaming)
Notes: Created for juniperphoenix for The Fall Fandom Free-For-All. Her prompt requested Sarah McLachlan's cover of "The Rainbow Connection" to the UFO/abduction/Samantha theme of The X-Files. I was intrigued by the lullaby nature of the song and its juxtaposition to the imagery of the show's Samantha abduction arc.

Thank you so much for this! I am ludicrously excited to have had a vid made just "for" me. :D

The direction you chose to go with this is really interesting. The vid I had in my head was all very "Ooh, pretty lights! Mystery! Wonder!", but this takes it in a much darker direction. The innocent wonder of the song — like Mulder's early enthusiasm for UFOs — is painfully twisted by the realization of the ugliness of the conspiracy and its tragic cost to the Mulder family.

The ending is my favorite part. That clip is just perfect, because it takes it right back to that doomed innocence. I got a little teary the first time I watched it.

Thanks again!

I'm really glad the vid was something you enjoyed and thank you for your kind, kind comments.

That's something I still want to very much explore. Sort of the flip side to the coin and without the scary and artfully lit aliens, lol. This vid was pretty pain free so that makes it extra easy to revisit and rework.

The ending is my favorite part. That clip is just perfect, because it takes it right back to that doomed innocence.

The ending was a happy accident. In looking at it then it was a total no brainer that it would close off the vid.

The story of the Mulder family is tragic. Bill Mulder's complicity in the project, the abduction of Samantha, and the resulting cover up and lies changed the family forever.

Thinking about Mulder's parents tends to paralyze me with anger. Sometimes there's yelling. I realize that I'm not being entirely fair to them; their hands were tied to a great extent. But still. Still.

~oooooooooooooooo~

Hello! I am a friend of the juniperphoneix and have a basic familiarity with the series as I used to watch the 'Files back in high school but that's been like 10 years ago and I'll admit I was never too into the mythology but I am sympathetically disposed toward it and hi your video is really really good and made me cry a little.

This vid hath made the Mulder quite a bit more real for me. (And, incidentally, not a little bit more heartbreaking. My goodness.) Not that I don't adore the Scully, of course (let it be understood that Scully is Da Bomb of All Things), but I can almost never "get" characters unless I separate them from their Others and stare at them for a while. (Or unless they separate themselves and sit in my head at their kitchen tables talking to themselves. Sometimes it happens.)

Yes.

Teh crazy. I haz it.

But this really was pretty damn fantast. :>

LOL, awww, hi! Thanks so much for commenting.

I think I've always leaned a bit more in the Scully direction even though I adore both of them tremendously but there are so many times when I just want to put Mulder in a happy place. I remember a quote from David in TV Guide back when the show was on the air and he said that someone should buy Mulder an ice cream cone. That's exactly how I feel about Mulder. I want to buy him an ice cream cone.

XF is the show I wanna hug and never let go. Oh Mulder!

I'm so glad you liked. Despite my XF love never in a million years did I think I'd vid it. juniperphoenix deserves all the credit for the concept.

I had to switch to my own style to leave a comment. Why so difficult, LJ.

I enjoyed this so much. I can't believe I missed it when it was first posted. It's very sad--to me--and feels even sadder given what we know about the new episodes coming in January. The Mulder family is a tragedy.

I'd never heard Sarah McLachlan's cover. I only know the song from The Muppet Movie (1979). I'm so old.
