I wanted to try something a little different. The dreamy quality of the episode really lent itself to the background blur I was experimenting with.

Screen captures are either by me or were snagged from the Knight Watchman archive.

Feel free to snag. Credit is always awesome but not necessary. Just spread the FK love.

These are beautiful, #15 in particular. People have fun joking about Ger and the seasick-cam, but his eps really do have some amazing images.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked them.

Oh I love the camera work in "Last Knight". It was one of the things that really grabbed me back when I was a newbie. It added so much to the episode.

If not for the last 5 minutes, I would have loved this episode.

Oh those last minutes kill me every time. Why!

These are beautiful. I haven't thought of much about LK as "beautiful" in about twelve years (the first year was a bit tipsy with reaction), but you've hit exactly the right tone here to bring back that aspect, with the dreamy unreality of the wash, and the silence.

I think I like the action scene in #16 best. I wouldn't have thought of making an icon of that, and it's a very good concept.

I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I adore the camera work in LK especially the way the camera would push in and pull out of a scene. There was so much that was being said in those silences. It was isolating and disorienting but not because of the movement but in that it augmented the sense that the episode was quietly building towards something. That's the beauty I saw in the episode.

Pilfered 18 and 19. Whenever I use them, I'll try to remember to credit you (it's good 'net karma, I know, but I tend to be forgetful). It's amazing how that brief interlude turned out hotter than the freakiest/skin-showingest sex scenes, and was so wrought with such intense emotions too. The rare times I watch LK anymore, I get a lump in my throat around that moment.

I also love the look he gives her when she tells him "if faith is a mortal folly, you're the most mortal man I've known". Such a pure, adoring gaze -- and a brief ray of sunshine in the darkest of storms that surrounds them. i suppose the fact that his face and body language expresses his fondness for her in lieu of words makes such a finish all the more painful.

Unlike some NNPackers, I never doubted his love for her. Love comes in varying degrees and, for some, it can even be too intense -- or perhaps too fragile -- to put in words. Nor is it always necessary to say it over and over again. (Plus, he said he loved her in the actual LK script so, while it didn't come out on t3h b00b t00b, it's still canonical enough for me.)

(This is Melissa from the KV Boards, BTW. So howdy!)

Melissa! :-)

Pilfer away!

Oh absolutely! I went crazy over board in getting screen shots during that moment. I swear I had clipped every other frame and almost all of them were of Ger. He sold it in ways that never gets old and every time I watch, for the tiniest of seconds, I think that just maybe everything will be OK for them.

I like how you put that. Throughout the series there's always been this effort on Nick's part to not say that he loves Natalie. It's always how much he "cares" and even in BMV when he acts on his feelings he asks Natalie what they're going to do "about the way they feel". Nick has always subscribed to the notion that those closest to him will eventually find their ruin in their association with him. To befriend him is to damn them, so to love him and be loved by him is to "destroy" them as he put it in LK.

For Nick to actually voice his love as he did in the script would have wonderfully articulated a journey of realization that his love isn't damnation. I do think he'd reached that point during the loft scene. His faith and Natalie's faith got him there. It would have been nice to hear it but like you pointed out, his body language expressed that love in spades.

It would have been nice if Nick's declaration of love had stayed in the filmed version but by not saying with words but rather by body language Nick can leave behind the baggage he associates with his love. perfunctory declaration of love

Totally agree. His pointed attempts NOT to actually say the L word seem to bring it out in more stark relief. And well, given his oh so high opinion of himself (*snort*), it does seem fairly obvious that love is a "curse" in his own mind. By NOT saying he loves her, he's ostensibly "protecting" her from himself. But it doesn't mean that, because he can't or won't say it, that the feeling of love/desire isn't there.

As a weird aside, and because this isn't the first time of thought of this: Since Nat's obviously a healthy woman of childbearing age, how much do you want to bet that her "monthly visitor" causes much awkwardness between them? Maybe I'm just strange, but I think it would've been interesting (and more humanizing, and quite funny) to get even an oblique idea of what that's like for them both. Vampire guy = loves blood and the ladies, has good sense of smell. Human woman = potential free snack. Therefore, human woman aka vampire's would-be main squeeze on the rag + self-depriving, starving vampire (not-quite) boyfriend in the same room = Bad Situation.

Hehe. No, I'm not on anything. But everything else has been said in fic, except for something like THAT. (It's REALLY strange how that subject's never come up in fic, given the potential for it and how blood and vampires go together like PB&J. Although I did have them talk about it in an adult fic of mine, from yea many moons ago.) Which would obviously come up at some point, given Nick and Nat knew each other for... oh, 5 or 6 years by series end?

But yeah... I think I need sleep. I'm "going strange" on myself.

I think that's a train of thought that is definitely bound to come up, at the very least from Natalie, especially in the beginning when her mind was undoubtedly going into hyper drive as she tried to come to terms with the existence of vampires. If it had skipped her mind in the beginning she sure as hell would of thought of it by the time her first period after meeting Nick came around.

I know we all give vampires the characteristic of heightened senses, the sense of smell being one of them, but did we ever get canon proof of that? I want to say that in "Cherry Blossoms" Nick detected Nancy Leung's blood through smell but I'm not sure. Heck, canon proof doesn't matter, I've had Nick reacting to Nat (not blood though) in some of my adult fic but I am curious.

I wonder which is worse for Nick, seeing blood or smelling blood, or if they're equally difficult. We've seen the effect blood at crime scenes has on Nick but with smell I want to say it's an attractive smell for him. Now that would certainly present some problems for Nick when he's around Natalie. I'm guessing that as with other things Nick has managed to temper his reactions to menstruating women. Hey, if the guy's gonna live among humans he'd better have but if the human in question is a woman he finds attractive like Nat then...oh boy. Commence with the awkwardness. For some reason I see them dancing around the issue and keeping it this unspoken thing between them.

LOL, I think for a lot of people it falls into taboo territory but you're totally right in that it's a "duh!" topic.

One of Eve's stories sort of obliquely danced around the possibility. In it Natalie was cranky because her beeper was on the fritz and Schanke comments to Nick that she must be on the rag. Nick distractedly says no and then Schanke gives him a look of "How would you know?" That bit worked on several levels. To Schanke, only someone who was intimately involved with Natalie would know when she is or isn't on her period. The reader knows Nick is a vampire so it's a simple conclusion to make that Nick would know when Natalie was menstruating. And then there's scenario 'C' in which Nick knows why Natalie is cranky and simply corrected Schanke based on that information. During my initial reading I thought scenario 'B' but the NNPacker in me loved scenario 'A'. I'm a sucker for the fic cliche in which the precinct, Schanke included, wonder about the status of Nick and Nat's relationship. :-P

I could soooo see her freaking out the first time (on the inside, of course) and Nick studiously "ignoring" it. But a little scene popped into my head earlier... and now my muse is badgering me to write again for a little ficlet or somesuch (Hey, where WERE you all this time, FK-muse?).

Heck, canon proof doesn't matter, I've had Nick reacting to Nat (not blood though) in some of my adult fic but I am curious.

Canonically, it appears he's got a heightened olfactory sense. There's a first season episode where, I believe, he's down in Lockup trying to find someone who escaped and he appears to do a rather wolf-like sniff and growl. But I don't remember the ep title (I just know it's S1 because I can clearly see baby!Nick in my mind's eye.), and I think he also does something like that again in a couple of S2 eps (Killer Instinct, for one).

Looks like I need to whip out the DVDs again...

You must tell me the name of this fic now. Barring that, a link to her website will suffice so I can hunt it down. :)

Ficlet! Ficlet! Ficlet! You know you want to. :-)

And then you can post it and I'll read it, and everyone will read it and everyone who's ever thought about this topic will throw their hands in the air and shout "Finally!" :-D

That's good to know. It wasn't something the show went to great lengths to depict. I remember that Moonlight had their main vampire actively sniffing the air on several occasions. It was a trope that was fun to watch the first few times but it got old rather fast. At least for me because it looked almost comical.

But I don't remember the ep title (I just know it's S1 because I can clearly see baby!Nick in my mind's eye.)

Hee! baby!Nick

The name of the story is "To Love the Sun". Eve is one of my favorite writers. All her stories are top notch and I Iove her depiction of the Nick/Nat relationship. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
